How to Survive a Debate Tournament (as a parent judge)

Image
Parent Judge and two competitors on day 2 of a debate tournament.    4 tips to survive your first debate tournament as a parent judge So your child signed up for debate (first mistake, but that's another post) and the coach is asking for parent volunteers at the next tournament. Never one to hide away when your kid needs help, you blindly raise your hand and say, "Pick me!!!" After you have been reassured that you will have training and know exactly how to judge a round, you happily go into your first tournament thinking how much "fun" this will be. Your "training" will consist of setting your biases aside and judging fairly. Feeling slightly let down but still confident you can make it through you head into your first round. After that 1st AC (1st speech given) you quickly realize you are in WAY OVER YOUR HEAD, and try to back peddle, but nope, you are in it for 6 more rounds. Here are 4 tips to survive that first tournament, and maybe enjoy it enough...

Happy 2nd Birthday

Elicia Currin Soderquist, I don't know you, or your real name, or your birthday, as your birth mom and I stopped talking after she decided to keep you. I want to hate her for that, but I just can't, because I'm a mom. You'd be two soon and tonight, I can't stop thinking about you. Elsie, I wish you love. The hugs and kisses and tickles and giggles type of love a two year old needs. I hope you are read to, from the all the fun books and that you love to read. I hope you have a hide and seek book that you love so much the flaps are ripped and the binding is falling apart. I hope you have a favorite stuffed animal, that smells bad, and is dirty, and that your mom has two or three of the same one, just so she can do laundry. I hope you have a favorite blanket, that you cuddle with at night, made for you by your grandma, who just cannot get enough of you. I hope someday you have siblings, who will adore you as much as my two did, before you even came. I hope on you...
